This richly illustrated book applies the discoveries of the new generation of food historians to the pleasures of dining and the culinary accomplishments of diverse civilizations, past and present. Because of the too-fast or careless editing apparently by non-English speakers in many cases I would not give this book as a gift to anyone I know who otherwise would be interested in the subject. There are several examples of this weakness, but the best comes from a passage talking about an appreciation for wine, where the book reads: Within that space, however, it offers a patchwork of widely differing and beautiful landscapes. By utilizing multidisciplinary literature and oral histories the book illuminates a more balanced look at how a California Cuisine embraced Slow Food Made Fast. Maybe convivial will happen in America too; my hope is eternal.
